Yes! Apps for Kids finally exists as an AppStore category
This is GREAT news for all of us apps for kids lovers, developers, bloggers, etc. Apples has finally organized an ‘Apps for Kids’ category on the iTunes App Store. Well, maybe still not a ‘category’ per se, but already an important list with great visibility at the front of the store.
It’s been way to long for us searching for kids’ apps within categories like games, education, books and entertainment for stuff worth having for our kids. This is finally organized onto a proper and really well deserved list, hopefully soon to become a category.
I believe that interactive applications for kids — when well used — are among the most important educational and development tools for kids ever invented and it was about time for Apple to recognize it. And trust this be a HUGE step for blossoming of the ecosystem of apps for kids’ helping the industry to grow.
This site is certainly VERY happy with this big little step.

I was excited as well. I think Apple realizes that the iPhone and iPod Touch has a ton of potential for parents and educators. The depth and creativity of the applications only gets better with time. Not too long ago (spring maybe?) Apple did have an “Apps for Toddlers” essential list. It was much smaller than the current “Apps for Kids” list but it certainly was a start!
That’s true Michael. Still not a proper category but already a list now with great exposure on the front of the store. Hopefully to become a category soon.
Agreed – this is an exciting step for kids and technology. I collaborate with 40+ members of a parent developer group called Moms With Apps who will all be very interested in this new App Store ‘category’. Our group makes mobile apps for childrens books, audio tales, math, phonics, geography, interactive stories, and other family-oriented tools (http://keepsmesmiling.blogspot.com/2009/11/moms-with-apps.html).
